Zo keerde de koning van Israël nors en mopperend naar Samaria terug. 1De wijngaard van Nabot
2Nabot, een man uit Jizreël, bezat een wijngaard aan de buitenkant van de stad, vlakbij Achabs buitenpaleis. 3Op een dag vroeg de koning hem of hij de wijngaard niet wilde verkopen. ‘Ik zou er graag een moestuin van willen maken,’ legde de koning uit, ‘omdat hij zo dicht naast het paleis ligt.’ Hij bood aan met contant geld te betalen of, als Nabot dat liever had, hem een beter stuk grond in ruil te geven. 4Maar Nabot antwoordde: ‘De Here verhoede dat ik dit stuk grond dat ik van mijn vader geërfd heb, verkoop. Het is al tijdenlang in het bezit van mijn familie.’ 5Achab ging kwaad en teleurgesteld terug naar zijn paleis. Hij weigerde iets te eten en ging op bed liggen met zijn gezicht naar de muur. 6‘Wat is er toch aan de hand?’ vroeg zijn vrouw Izebel hem. ‘Waarom eet je niet? Hoe kom je zo nukkig en boos?’ 7‘Ik heb Nabot gevraagd of hij mij zijn wijngaard wil verkopen of wil ruilen voor een ander stuk grond, maar hij weigert,’ vertelde Achab. 8‘Ben jij nu de koning van Israël of hoe zit dat?’ wilde Izebel van hem weten. ‘Sta op, eet wat en maak je geen zorgen meer. Ik zal zorgen dat je Nabots wijngaard krijgt.’ 9Zij schreef enkele brieven namens Achab, sloot ze met zijn zegel en stuurde ze naar de stadsbestuurders van Jizreël, waar Nabot woonde. 10In de brief beval zij: ‘Roep de burgers bijeen om te vasten en te bidden. Haal Nabot naar voren 11en zorg dat twee nietsnutten tegen hem getuigen en hem beschuldigen van het vervloeken van God en de koning. Breng hem daarna buiten de stad en stenig hem, zodat hij sterft.’ 12De stadsbestuurders en de aanzienlijkste mannen in Nabots woonplaats deden wat Izebel in haar brieven van hen had gevraagd. 13Zij belegden een samenkomst en sleurden Nabot voor de rechtbank. 14Twee gewetenloze mannen beschuldigden hem ervan God en de koning te hebben vervloekt. Daarop werd hij buiten de stad gebracht en met stenen doodgegooid. 15De stadsbestuurders stuurden Izebel daarna de boodschap dat Nabot dood was. 16Toen Izebel het nieuws had vernomen, zei zij tegen Achab: ‘Herinner jij je die wijngaard nog die Nabot niet wilde verkopen? Wel, je kunt hem op dit moment krijgen. Nabot is dood.’ 17Achab ging naar de wijngaard om die in bezit te nemen. 18Maar de Here zei tegen Elia: 19‘Ga naar Samaria en zoek koning Achab op. Hij is te vinden bij de wijngaard van Nabot, want die wil hij in bezit nemen. 20Geef hem de volgende boodschap van Mij door: “Is het vermoorden van Nabot nog niet erg genoeg? Moet u hem ook nog beroven? Omdat u dit hebt gedaan, zullen de honden uw bloed oplikken, net zoals zij Nabots bloed hebben opgelikt.” ’ 21‘Dus mijn vijand heeft mij gevonden,’ riep Achab Elia toe. ‘Ja,’ antwoordde Elia, ‘ik ben hier gekomen om Gods vloek over u uit te spreken, omdat u alleen nog maar doet wat kwaad is in de ogen van de Here. 22De Here gaat een ramp over u brengen en zal u uitroeien, geen van uw mannelijke nakomelingen, van hoog tot laag, zal het overleven. 23Hij gaat uw familie vernietigen, net zoals dat gebeurde met de families van koning Jerobeam en koning Basa. U hebt zijn toorn opgewekt en heel Israël aangevoerd bij het zondigen. 24De Here heeft ook gezegd dat de honden van Jizreël uw vrouw Izebel zullen verscheuren bij de stadsmuur. 25De leden van uw familie die in de stad sterven, zullen door honden worden opgegeten en de gieren zullen zich storten op hen die op het land sterven.’ 26Niemand anders had zich zo volledig aan de zonde overgegeven als Achab, want zijn vrouw Izebel moedigde hem voortdurend aan tot allerlei goddeloze dingen. 27Hij was vooral schuldig omdat hij, net als de Amorieten, afgoden diende. En dat volk had de Here nu juist het land uit gejaagd om ruimte te maken voor zijn volk Israël. 28Toen Achab deze profetieën hoorde, scheurde hij zijn kleren, trok vodden aan, vastte, sliep in dezelfde vodden en liep rond als een toonbeeld van vernedering. 29Elia kreeg daarop een andere boodschap van de Here:

When you click on a word, the detailed lexicon opens with:
'Vocabulary' Bibles link the translation to Greek & Hebrew. So far, only some Bibles have this vocabulary feature. They are shown in the Bible select screen with the letter 'V'.
It is the number of occurrences of a word in the Bible. Click on it to see them all in the selected Bible(s).
This reveals different forms for some words and names. These details are often interesting to scholars, eg the word 'beginning' in Genesis.
